Breast Lift (Mastopexy)

Mastopexy, more commonly known as a breast lift, is a plastic surgery procedure designed to lift the breasts. The excess skin is precisely removed, and surrounding tissue is expertly tightened, resulting in a breast contour that is reshaped and capable of better supporting the weight of the breast.

Why Do Breasts Sag?

It’s an unpleasant fact, as we age our skin begins to sag as skin loses its elasticity. For some women, this fact is particularly problematic as breast tissue thins, reducing the breasts’ firmness and shape.

Age and gravity aren’t the only cause of sagging breasts. Other contributing factors are:

  • Significant weight gain
  • Significant weight loss
  • Pregnancy
  • Breast-feeding

Problems Caused By Pendulous Breasts

Women may find that their clothes no longer fit properly, and it becomes harder to find a bra if their breasts are pendulous.
Large, sagging breasts also cause women to experience:

  • Neck pain
  • Back pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Poor posture
  • Skin irritation
  • Under-breast Infections

Am I a Candidate for Breast Lift Surgery?

At Mazza Plastic Surgery, located in Ft. Myers, FL, our surgeons will evaluate your overall health and the shape and skin of your breasts to determine if you are a candidate for a breast lift. Be prepared to thoroughly discuss your aesthetic goals and review your medical history. It is important that you are in overall good health, you weight is stabilized, and that you no longer plan to become pregnant and have children.

Dr. Mazza advises that a traditional breast lift will not change the size or augment your breast. You may also want to discuss whether a breast augmentation and lift or a dermal auto-augmentation mastopexy (see below) are needed to achieve your body shaping needs.

However, if you want to regain your youthful breast shape and firmness, a breast lift may be right for you.

Traditional Breast Lift Procedure

Dr. Joseph Mazza and Dr. Davek Sharma utilize minimally invasive surgical techniques to minimize scaring and aid in their patients’ fast recovery. Typically, the breast lift procedure is done with very small incisions made around the areola on the underside of the breasts. After the incisions are made your surgeon will precisely remove any excess breast tissue and reposition the breasts on the chest wall. A breast lift will restore a woman’s breast to a more youthful shape and perkiness.

What is Dermal Mastopexy?

A dermal auto-augmentation mastopexy is a new procedure that is gaining traction, and we are proud to offer it here at Mazza Plastic Surgery in Fort Myers, FL. Essentially it is a special type of mastopexy, or breast lift, which is a procedure often recommended in plastic surgery to restore the nipple and areola to their natural height.

What are the Benefits of Dermal Mastopexy?

The dermal auto-augmentation mastopexy is a volume-preserving procedure. It is becoming popular in patients who would like to avoid the use of a breast implant and still maintain volume at the same time as a lifting surgery. It is also a great option for a patient who wishes to remove their old breast implants and preserve as much of their native breast tissue as possible while still getting a breast lift.

What’s the Difference Between Traditional Mastopexy and Dermal Mastopexy?

In a normal breast lift, some of the tissue is discarded, but in the dermal mastopexy all of your tissue is preserved and can be used to maximize the volume in a sort of “auto augmentation” fashion.

Dermal mastopexy is similar to traditional mastopexy with regards to recovery and scars. Typically, a lollipop style or anchor style scar is required.

What’s All the Buzz About the Internal Bra?

The internal bra (a breast lift with internal support) has also recently gained popularity due to social media. The internal bra is a technique that can be added to any breast surgery but is commonly used with breast lifts. The technique uses a piece of bioabsorbable mesh (DuraSorb® or GalaFLEX™) to create a reinforced “internal bra” that stimulates collagen and scar tissue to provide long-lasting, durable results. It is reserved for certain cases, such as thin skin or tissues, multiple breasts surgeries or revisions, large or heavy implants, or any other circumstance where soft tissue support is needed. Your plastic surgeon will decide if you need mesh or not. It is important to have a personalized consult so your surgical plan can be individualized and tailored to you!

Breast Lift Recovery

Dr. Mazza and Dr. Sharma advise their Fort Myers mastopexy patients to expect some mild discomfort and pain. Pain medication will be prescribed to relieve pain. Expect some bruising and swelling.

We ask patients to wear a post-operative bra for support for 4 to 8 weeks. Strenuous activity should be avoided during this timeframe.

Recovery is usually 2 to 4 weeks. Patients can usually go back to work in certain circumstances by around 2 to 3 weeks. Everyone is different, so be sure to consult with your surgeon and follow their post-op instructions.
