Facial Fat Transfer

Fat is harvested from another area of your body using a micro liposuction instrument. The processed fat is then injected to augment areas of your face, thereby enhancing your appearance.

Fat grafting is a more permanent solution to the re-volumizing procedure.

The most common reason to have a facial fat transfer is to reverse the signs of aging by the transfer of the patient’s fat and stem cells into the areas of the face that have lost their youthful fullness. The common areas for the fat to be transferred from are the inner thighs and abdomen. The most common areas for the fat to be transferred to are the nasal labial folds and cheeks.

Typically, over 50% of the fat cells will not survive which necessitates an “overcorrection” of the grafted cells. This means that the patient may look a little unusual or swollen in the grafted areas for the first few days. There may also be a little bruising which will dissipate within a week or so.

Additionally, some patients wish to combine Restylane® and/or Juvéderm® in conjunction with fat grafting.  This is usually recommended to be done 2-3 weeks after surgery.

WHAT IS THE RECOVERY FOR FACIAL FAT TRANSFER?

Recovery includes no lifting anything over 15 lbs for 2 weeks, sleeping with head elevated for first few days and applying ice packs for the first 24-48 hours.
